Coffee Morning

I am really pleased with the success of our Macmillan Coffee Morning and would like to thank parents and staff donations of cakes, biscuits and raffle prizes.  I would like to thank Mrs Smith, Mrs Simpson and our Year 6 pupils for their help to serve drinks and sell the cakes and also Miss Hair for arranging the event.  Many thanks especially to the friends, parents and grandparents who joined us for coffee and cake and helped to raise money for such a worthy cause.  We have raised £220 so far.

Ulverston Voices

Our Key Stage 1 pupils enjoyed a visit from Dowdales music teacher, Emma Richardson on Tuesday this week for a singing session.  They have been invited to join other local schools to perform some songs on stage at The Coronation Hall, Ulverston on Wednesday 14th October.  Although all children have been learning the song we will only be taking Year 1 and Year 2.  This is due to the fact that the children go the hall in the afternoon for rehearsals and then stay for the performance in the evening which, we feel, would be too long a day for our younger children.  However, letters providing more detail will soon be sent out and if Reception parents think their child would be okay to attend then we would of course be happy to take them along with us.

Parent/community Support

I would like to thank all those of you that have volunteered your support in school so far this term.  I am very keen to develop parent partnerships and feel any regular time you can offer is invaluable.  If you have any particular skills or expertise and are interested in perhaps delivering a lunch time or after school extra-curricular activity, or perhaps just a one off ‘show and tell’, then please do get in touch.  Our Year 3/4 class were very interested to hear about special effects and the design and making of film and animation props when past pupil, Alastair Fleming paid us a visit.

School trips

Another area I would like to improve on is educational visits and I have asked class teachers to think about booking a trip each term.  Miss Stewart has planned a trip for the Pixies and Unicorns to Dalton Safari Zoo on Thursday, October 8th which will tie in with their topic on animals.  Mr Procter has made arrangements for the Dragons to visit Furness Abbey on October 5th for a guided tour and workshop with the talented Iain McNichol to further develop their work on local history.  In addition to planning the Year 5/6 residential trip to Londan next year, Mrs Hoekstra is considering a visit to the Dock Museum this term as the children are learning about World War 2.  You will receive more detailed information about any upcoming trips in due course.

I am interested in your views about trips in particular on costs, distances and frequency.  I intend to collect views at the next Friends meeting (Monday 5th  Oct, 7:30pm) if you can make it.
