We have recently heard some fabulous news. Harry Mayou (Yr 6) entered a writing competition, Jacqueline Wilson’s Creative Writing Prize 2018,… and he won!!! Harry was tasked to write a story of no more than 1000 words about an unlikely friendship and his ‘highly original, imaginative and extremely well written story’ was chosen from thousands of entries. As you can imagine we are absolutely thrilled for Harry. He will receive a bundle of prizes, including books for our school, but, perhaps more exciting than anything, his story will be published in a special edition of Jacqueline’s book, ‘My Mum Tracy Beaker’ which will be released on 21st February 2019. We are in awe that we will have a published author on our school roll!
You can read Harry’s story on the link below and he has also been interviewed by BBC Radio Cumbria so tune in today between 5-6pm to listen to what inspired him to write such a wonderful tale.
Harry is an amazing pupil and, in all my years of teaching, he has stood out for being such a self-motivated and eager learner who constantly aims to improve. We strive for our children to be ambitious and motivated in order to achieve the success they are capable of and Harry is a perfect example of this and what can be achieved with the right attitude to learning.
As a school we intend to celebrate his success by using his story as a stimulus for English teaching right across the school next term. I will be asking all teachers to plan lessons and activities based on his story, A Fantastic Tail, and I have no doubt that his brilliant talent will inspire other children in their writing too. They will certainly be more motivated knowing that the story they are studying has been written by their friend.
Well done Harry! You have made us all extremely proud!
We still have 4 tickets available due to so many children being out of school on the day of the Panto. It would be great to re-sell them so we do not lose the money. If you’d like a ticket, they are available to purchase on Parentmail or you can see
Health and Well-being
I recently consulted Cumbria Public Health Service and asked if they would work with me to review the health and well-being practices we have in school. It was a very useful exercise which highlighted the excellent provision we currently have and it gave us some insight into areas we might want to improve.
These 3 areas are:
1. Looking at the quality and nutritional balance of school meals and packed lunches,
2. Upskilling of all staff with further training on Basic Mental Health,
3. Developing parents’ understanding of E-Safety and Digital Well-Being
Because we are keen to ensure we are doing the very best for our pupils, academically, socially and also their health, we will be taking on board the advice given following the review and there will be ongoing work within those three areas which you will be informed of via the weekly newsletter.
In the meantime, they have an excellent website with a dedicated Parent Zone and this contains a wealth of information. What may be particularly useful, especially at this time of year, is their Common Childhood Illnesses section for help to identify and treat common ailments and whether you should be seeking advice from a pharmacist first or your GP.
Crib Service & Christmas Jumper Day
Next Friday is the Crib Service at Lindal Church. We will be setting off walking at 1:00pm. If any parents could assist us that would be fantastic.
That Friday is also the official Christmas Jumper Day. For a minimum donation of £1, your child can come to school in non-uniform, wearing a Christmas Jumper or other festive attire! The money raised will be donated to the Save the Children charity. Please make your donation through Parentmail and school will then send off a cheque.
These are useful dates for your diary that will be added to each week. More information about each event will be provided nearer the time.
