As we approach the final week of what seems to have been a very long and busy term, this will be my last newsletter. We do still have a number of things going on next week which we will update you with via ParentMail if needed.
Philosophy for Children – Silver Award
I am thrilled to inform you that our school has been given the Silver Award in recognition for the excellent work that we do promote the children’s thinking and language and communication skills through philosophy. I would like to thank Mr Procter as, within his role as PSHCE leader, he has been instrumental in developing P4C throughout the school and making the application for this award.
Building Work
You may have noticed some fencing in the school playgrounds. This is because our external stone wall needs repairing and this work will be conducted by BK Builders over the summer break. We are also having new fencing installed around the school garden. There will be some minimal work carried out in the building such as an air conditioning unit installed in Class 3. It will mean that there is a degree of activity in and outside of school but disruption to our neighbour’s should be kept to a minimum. I will be making regular visits and will be in constant communication with the contractors and project manager so please do let me know if there are any problems.
Final Week Arrangements
There will be no extra-curricular clubs this week. Please ensure that your child is booked into the After-School Club if childcare is required. We have had a number of children in recent weeks who have not been collected from school or booked in with the After-School Club.
Monday 15th July – Summer Sports Fun Day
- Children should arrive at Glaxo Sports Centre at 8:50am with a packed lunch and plenty to drink.
- PE kits should be worn. If it is cold, children can wear tracksuit bottoms, if it is hot then please provide sun protection.
- Any children needing an inhaler or other medication should bring these with them.
- Children should be collected at 3:15pm.
Tuesday 16th July – Open Day
- This is an opportunity for parents to come into school and look through their child’s work alongside their child.
- KS1 parents can come anytime between 9am and 11:15am. KS2 parents can come anytime between 1pm and 2:30pm. If you have a child in both key stages then you are free to choose either the morning or the afternoon.
- When a parent arrives, their child will be collected from the classroom. They will bring their tray full of books. Hopefully the weather will be nice and a space can be found inside or outside school for parents to sit and look through their work.
- Once time has been spent looking at the books, parents can take their child and their books home.
- Reports will be given on this day also.
- If you are unable to visit during school time, your child will bring home their books and reports home at the usual time of 3:15pm. Please supply them with a strong carry bag.
Tuesday 16th July – Furness School Games Awards Evening
- We have been asked to attend the awards evening as our school and teams/individuals have been nominated to receive an award.
- Mrs Elliott has given invites to those who need to attend and they should arrive at Furness Academy for 6pm then collected again at 8pm. Children should arrive in their full uniform.
- We will update Twitter with news of any awards we receive.
Wednesday 17th July – Year 6 Leavers’ Treat
- Year 6 children are free to bring in shirts for signing from this day.
- The Year 6 pupils will be visiting Lazer Quest. We will be departing school at 4pm.
- After Lazer Quest, staff and the pupils will be eating at Brewer’s Fayre at 5:30pm.
- Children should be
collected from Brewer’s Fayre at 6:40pm
Also on Wednesday, if the weather is dry, we may take groups of children to the park for outdoor activities or den building within the school garden.
Thursday 18th July – Activity Day
- Children from Class 1 and 2 are free to bring in a board game
- Children from Class 3 and Class 4 are free to bring a board game or electronic device however, they must take full responsibility for the care of any devices brought to school.
Friday 19th July – Leavers’ Assembly & Mrs Elliott’s Last Day
- We will be celebrating Mrs Elliott’s time with us during a morning assembly
- Year 6 will be presenting to staff, pupils and their parent/grandparents during their Leaver’s Assembly at 1:30pm. Please do not arrive before 1:15pm as we will be setting up the hall.
LAST DAY FINISHING TIME – Year 6 will be able to leave with their parents after their assembly. Therefore, all parents are free to collect their children from 2:30pm onwards.
Summer Birthdays
There are several children celebrating their birthdays between now and when we return in September. From Class 1 we have Joel and Eve who will be turning 6, in Class 2 there will be Wren and Eliza who will turn 7 and Lexie and Ben who will both turn 8. Evie, Lewis, Alexander and William from Year 4 will all be celebrating their 9th birthdays. Lucy from Year 5 will turn 10 and Tyler from Year 6 will have his 11th birthday before transferring to secondary school.

Thank You!
There are so many people who give up their time to support our school that it would be difficult to give everyone the mention they deserve in this newsletter and if there is anyone that has been forgot, it has not been intentional. I often reflect on how lucky myself, the staff and the pupils are to have such supportive families and community members and governors who are all as equally dedicated to seeing the children and the school succeed.
Firstly, I would like to thank the Friends for their continued efforts to fundraise and ensure that the children’s experiences and opportunities are enriched as a direct benefit. I would like to thank Mr Goodall, Mr Bishop and Mrs Simpson for the time they give every week to listening to readers in Class 1. It is so important for the children to be listened to regularly and even more so in this early stage of their development. Mrs Simpson and Mrs Smith have also given their time to the coaching of our gym teams again this year and this was fundamental to their success. We have had another very successful year in sport. Our children have participated in numerous competitions and won many medals and trophies. This would not be possible without the help of parents such as Mrs Brettle, Mrs Heap, Mrs Satterthwaite and many others who we continually rely on for help with transportation so thank you. Year 3 have benefitted this year from working with Mrs Bailey who has volunteered to deliver their French lessons. Mrs Bailey speaks many languages and has worked with the children each week to develop their skills which we are very grateful for. I would also like to thank Christina. Although she is now a valued member of our staff and has taught art in Class 3 and Class 4 every week, she has also spent much of her own time preparing these amazing lessons and has also recently stepped in to help us cover our lunch times. We were thrilled this week when our Year 6 SAT results were released. The children have all done very well and we are very proud of their achievements. I would like to thank them for their hard work preparing, their parents for the encouragement they gave and also Mrs Bowns, Mrs Hoekstra and Ms Trelore for the additional and unpaid support they have given the children when delivering interventions.
Finally, I would like to thank Mrs Elliott for her 4 years as class teacher and PE Leader at Lindal and Marton.
Mrs Elliott has been a wonderful member of staff and we are very sad to see her leave. She has given up so much of her own time to organizing and attending sports events and competitions, not to mention the additional time spent preparing the children for those competitions and ensuring they have the correct kit, equipment and transport. It is a huge job and she has been fantastic. As class teacher, Mrs Elliott has cared for and nurtured all the pupils she has taught and provided them with a calm and hardworking class climate which has helped so many make excellent progress. We will miss her a great deal but wish her the very best in her new school and know that she will thoroughly enjoy the challenge of improving PE provision in a new setting. There is no-one better for the job!
