Background
In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education (PE) and sport. This funding should be used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision.
Funding will be allocated to all maintained and state-funded schools with primary phase pupils, including: primary, middle, special and non-maintained special schools, academies and pupil referral units from 1 September 2013. A typical primary school will receive about £9,250 annually in the academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15.
Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of. Examples of how this funding might be spent are set out in annex A.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. We will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils progress and participation in PE and school sport. We are required to publish on-line information about how we have used the additional funding.
Allocation
All schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £8000 plus a premium of £5 per pupil.
PE and Sport at LAMPS
We have a strong PE and Sports curriculum here at LAMPS and recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils receive at least 2 hours of high quality well-planned PE per week delivered by confident and well trained teachers. The successful delivery of the curriculum supports all aspects of health education within the school.
‘All pupils enjoy a wealth of extra-curricular activities in which sports and music are strong features. This has a strong impact on their outstanding personal development and on their exceptionally good understanding of how to lead healthy lifestyles.’ (Ofsted 2011)
We have established links with Dowdales School and the primary schools in the Furness Primary Collaborative (FPC). The school’s PE and Sports Leader liaises closely with Dowdales School, specialist coaches and other schools to organise sporting events and staff training.
